Lithuanian Pavilion at EXPO, 2005
The main idea behind the Lithuanian pavilion at EXPO 2005 was the pattern of the DNA spiral as a universal metaphor for life and connection. Two large spirals were designed to resemble passing trains, bringing together nature and civilisation: two systems that are inseparable yet exist in constant tension.
Screens installed on the inner sides of the spirals showed images changing every second, combining footage of Lithuanian nature and human-built environment. The interconnected narratives emphasised the idea that the concepts of ‘cleanliness’ and ‘naturalness’ cannot be separated from the effects of civilisation. The exhibit proposed not an idealised landscape but a reflection on human responsibility and the inevitable tension between creation and destruction.
The project was created within the context of EXPO 2005 theme, ‘Nature’s Wisdom’, and served as an attempt to present Lithuania not only through aesthetics, but also through a critical relationship with the environment.
The exhibit will hint at a conflict between man and nature.
