Better to Do Something than Nothing, 1998
This is a two-screen video installation accompanied by a light box, filmed in the same main hall of the Contemporary Art Centre where it was later presented in the group exhibition. On one screen, the hall floor is seen being polished in preparation for the exhibition; on the other, Čeponytė’s feet run across it. The work brings together two themes characteristic of this artistic duo: beauty rituals and routine. It can also be read as a self-reflective replication, substituting architecture with the field of visual art.
– Virginija Januškevičiūtė
This work consists of two video projections and a photograph. The visual element that unites them is the floor of the Contemporary Art Centre, which has since changed. However, this represents only one layer of meaning within the work. At the same time, the artists continue the reflections initiated in their earlier video installations. The work attempts to capture the moment at which unnoticed everyday life turns into a meaningless sequence of actions. The artists achieve this through the endless repetition of elementary actions – such as monotonously repeating a word – until, over time, its meaning fades from consciousness and only a rhythmic combination of sounds remains.
